A Conversation With Lenny About Diabetes

Last night, as I was getting dinner ready and preparing to check Lenny's sugar, we had an interesting conversation I thought I would share with you.

I think he was feeling kind of "off" today, as his blood sugars were unusually high most of the day (200s-300s, still not sure why). He didn't want to have his sugar checked, and kept yelling "I hate diabetes, mom!" I keep reassuring him that this is a normal feeling he has about diabetes, and that lots of other kids feel the same way.

Next thing I know, he says...

"Mom, when will I be cured?"

My response: "Cured?"

His response: "Yeah, cured of my diabetes?"

My response: "Ya know, Lenny, I don't know. But I do know this, there are lots and lots of doctors, all over the world, trying to find a cure for diabetes, for kids just like you!"

Usually he will atleast give me a smile, but this time he didn't. Instead, he said...

"Will you tell those doctors to find a cure, because I don't want diabetes anymore!"

I said, "Yes, Lenny, but it may take some time for them to find a cure. It is a very big, very hard job finding a cure for something. We just need to be a little patient."

Later, as we were eating, I told Lenny... (keep in mind, hes 5 years old! LOL!)

"Lenny, you know you help those doctors, right? You help them find a cure!"

He says: "How?!"

I said "Do  you remember last year, when we did some fundraising? When we sold those Paper Snoopies and you collected money instead of candy when you went Trick-or-Treating?"

He says: "yeah.."

I said, "That's how you are helping them! You are raising money to help them find a cure! They use that money to buy big, expensive equipment and stuff they need to do the research to find a cure! You are being a big help to them!"

Without missing a beat, he immediately replied....

"Mom.... we need to get more money!"

HAHA, as they always say... Out the mouths of children! LOL!
